Action Field Kodra (AFK) visual arts festival, one of the most prominent international art events in Greece, is organized every year by the City of Kalamaria as part of ‘Para thin’ alos’ festival and aspires to promote young artists and experimental, innovative artistic practices. Since 2001, when it opened its gates for the first time, AFK has presented more that 2.500 artists and curators, showcased more than 4.000 artworks and hosted more than 70.000 Greek and foreign visitors. This year, Action Field Kodra stands its ground for 18th consecutive time, showcasing works and in situ projects from the local and international artistic scene. Opening will take place on Sunday 16.09.2018 at 20:00 in the Dorms building of the ex-military camp.
Under the title “Focus Locus” this year’s exhibitions will renegotiate the concept of locus as well as a wide range of issues associated with it, such as displacement, relocation and settlement, focusing also on the history of the region of Kalamaria and of the camp itself. The Fine Arts Schools’ graduates’ exhibition “Kodra Fresh”, will be at the core of the festival, including final years’ students and recent graduates from Greece and abroad. In addition, there will be a presentation of the Historical Archives of Greek Refugees (H.A.G.R.) of the Municipality of Kalamaria in the form of a digital projection of historical documents, photographs and oral testimonies. Moreover, cyberspace, digital history and digital memory will also be addressed in two additional exhibitions; “Cyber Art Space” will feature new works by two artists; Babis Venetopoulos will develop his project as a digital public space Augmented Reality artwork in the outdoor space of the camp, which visitors will be able to see and ‘navigate’ around with the use of their smartphones (Android OS, only) by downloading a free app. Zannis Bafaloukos will present an interactive video installation in the Dorms building. Finally, the solo presentation of artist and researcher, Kyriaki Goni, will initiate a dialogue with the artworks of Kodra Fresh.
The Volunteers’ Program, structurally involved with all aspects of the festival, will be the educational part of Action Field Kodra giving the chance to all participants to experience interactive workshops and seminars.
