My finger is stuck on the repeat button. So is my mind. For two years I have been waiting for this bloody album to be released. Now, I'm finally vindicated.
"A collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies". With these words, Steven Ellison, aka Flying Lotus, sometimes called FlyLo, described his highly anticipated new album, which was released last October by Warp Records, entitled “Until The Quiet Comes”.
Resident of L.A, free spirit and a Coltrane, the 29-year-old producer seems to !!! in the electronic and experimental hip-hop music scene. With a highly experimental and vaguely abstract sound, FlyLo seems to honor his genes, since the jazz element exists in almost all of his pieces.
He is the founder and leader of the record label Brainfeeder, an independent label that focuses on the production of electronic and instrumental hip-hop music and is definitely worth your attention if you are a fan of electronic/hip-hop music, since in the roster includes names such as Daedalus, Strangeloop, TOKiMONSTA etc.
Using a laptop, and a sampler called Akai MPC, it seems that FlyLo can do miracles. Having worked mainly with Warp Records and other labels such as Ramp Recordings, Tectonic Records and Brownswood Recordings, he has released singles, EPs, mixes, and four studio albums.
He made his debut in 2006 with the album “1983” which was released by Plug Research Records”. Two years later, he released the album “Los Angeles” in collaboration with Warp Records. In 2010 the album “Cosmogramma” followed, again by Warp. In 2012, he recorded his fourth album, “Until The Quiet Comes” which was ranked 34th in the US Billboard 200 and sold 13.000 copies during the first week after its release.
The album “Until The Quiet Comes” has psychedelic influences, different dynamics, various mixing techniques and a combination of hip-hop and electronica. "Hypnotizing rhythms, dreamy vocals, synths, pulsating percussive textures, irregular drum beats, trembling basslines, unique samples ...» All these make you say how much you love 'this - Flying Lotus - sound ".
Among the vocals of the new tracks you may recognise the voices of Thom Yorke, Laura Darlington, Erykah Badu and Niki Randa. And if «Cosmogramma» is characterised by rhythm, then surely melody pervades in «Until the Quiet Comes»
Melody full of disparate elements that create a "heavenly atmosphere of jazz and snapping rhythms." It is not just a collection of songs but a union of different psychological moods and situations that are cut and sewn in such a way that they manage to create "one deformed inner monologue "-" an emotional introspection of the artist himself. "Yes, I dare say that this is an album that can be defined as " the musical companion of your dreams."
Although Flying Lotus’s presence in production has not been long, it seems to be enough to characterise him as a "pioneer" or "innovative" and rather fairly, since his name is connected with the rebirth of the West Coast beat.
If you're a fan of electronic music scene, a little bit of a dreamer, and yet you haven’t heard of him, I dare you to listen to him. But I must warn you that if «Cosmogramma» might cause you "a strong electric shock," then, surely, «Until the Quiet Comes» will definitely blow your mind...
