Imagine a gray cityscape, a mute human reverberation, a sad and trivial life that progresses into the future. You stand still; you listen; and imply to yourself that even death can be welcomed... When out of a sudden the melody of despair becomes a cry for life. The notes dissolve the bleak atmosphere allowing the light of hope to overcome its cowardice, disbanding grayness and penetrate liberatingly in your lungs. You decide to live! This strange mixing of sadness and optimism is transmitted through the songs that make up Homeward Bound by Vinyl Suicide.
Vinyl Suicide characterize (humorously) their music as suicide pop and I would say that this is one of the most imaginative characterizations that someone can give to the melodic indie pop which for years has made its appearance in Greece with such great bands like Closer, Abbie Gale, Papercut, Carte Postale, Tango With Lions and others. Standing firmly on the successful recipe previously propelled by Raining Pleasure, in which melancholic melodic and lyrical moods are mixed successively with explosive guitar and voice surges, modern Greek indie pop (and with it Vinyl Suicide) has become a highly visible style with an absolutely own character, which I dare say is something very authentic – despite of its inclusion in the general forms of alternative/indie pop that we know and love in foreign acts.
In the Artcore review for 2015 I had included Homeward Bound within the ten best Greek releases by noting that it was for me the discovery of the year, although their first release occurred three years ago. I'm not sure if listeners of the album will get the same impression I described in the beginning, but if they try a second and third listening, they will surely replace the bittersweet melancholy with a mood for dancing.
Homeward Bound does not produce anything shockingly new, apart from the authenticity that, as I mentioned, generally characterizes Greek indie pop as a style. But the successful mixing of groovy pop rhythms, rock riffs and electronic elements give the disc its own particular character. The voice of Dimitra Sideris has high potential and in moments of outbreak reminds me of Florence Welch. The compositions of Ted Kapa and their subsequent orchestration seem to bear the awareness of Dimitra’s vocal gem and are built around it in order to enforce it. This is also achieved by the extremely meticulous production. I will also focus on the great job Vinyl Suicide have done in lyrical level. Apparently, they reflect personal experiences, however they do it without crappy navel-gazing but with self-confidence that hits you in the face. As if the necessary introspection has occurred long before and has settled in a spirit of personal maturity towards events. And all this in English – this is indeed a success.
Homeward Bound contains only eight songs, which I also consider a positive feature of the album. For me, musicians really have to go back to the old logic imposed by vinyl and present their best songs in an album, instead of filling a cd with fifteen or twenty songs eliminating any sense of uniqueness in their work. Instead, Vinyl Suicide have made a careful selection of their compositions, seeking to convey into the project and communicate to the public what they wish to achieve: "A disk with personal and experiential reports, which together give a sense of reality We created and live in recent years" (interview in Lifo, 5/11/2015). They achieve exactly that!
