“The Horse and Other Weird Tales” is the third album from the Finnish psych-heavy blues band, following their self-titled album in 2012 and “Second Psychedelic Coming: The Aquarius Tapes” in 2015.
Music wise, “The Horse…” does not display any significant differences from its predecessors; it does however “adopt” a bluesy attitude towards its compositions, mostly because of Jess’s soulful vocals along with Abraham’s “trippy” keyboards. The album’s opening track “Death Is the Doors” tends to be a great rock ‘n’ roll intro, without omitting the well-established occult sound of their previous releases.
JATAO, in this release, succeed to combine in an inspiring way, heavy psych music in the fashion of Iron Butterfly, Mountain or Atomic Rooster with groovy blues beats. Some good examples from the record would be “Shining” and “(Here Comes) The Rainbow Mouth” with slightly faster and more raw hard psych music patterns as well as “You and Eyes’ and ‘Anyway the Minds Flow” with heavy, slow and ritualistic music forms.
The album’s production is crystal clear as anticipated, while another asset would definitely be the mesmerising, cosmic front cover. Fans of Blues Pills and/or Jex Thoth will absolutely love this release!
